Driving Big Changes

New Hospice CEO drives big changes

Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty has a new Chief Executive at the wheel and Bryce Sheedy is driving big changes in the organisation with a positive outlook and growth being felt by staff and patients alike.

The Hospice organisation is taking on new clinical and support staff, with a pōhiri next month for five new staff; three Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Clinical Lead and a Doctor. With the clinical growth, the team is also growing its support and back-office functions, strengthening links into the community, growing their cultural practice, and supporting volunteers and fundraising.

“The good vibes start inside our walls, and we have a growing and energetic team of specialists joining us. Their work makes a difference every day in the lives of those in our care. We’re supporting 50-60 people at any one time and our strong relationship with the hospital means that they are now referring their palliative patients into our care as well. Having good people means we are confident and trusted to be good at what we do best – taking care of people at the end of their lives,”

Mr Sheedy said.

Having more staff to share the load means more time with patients and their families and more opportunities for people to choose their end-of-life journey and the support they need to put that in place. Whether that is physical resources like beds or chairs, medical support with medication or equipment, or social, spiritual or cultural support.

“We cover a huge area – our staff travel more than 11,000kms a month getting around the Eastern Bay of Plenty to care and support for those needing end-of-life care. It is a huge responsibility and I have been excited to see how much the community wants to support us to do this really well.
“I have been putting on my big-boy socks and fronting a lot of community events and talks in recent months – you can check out the wide range of my selfies on our Facebook page! But what has stood out to me most was how deeply the community cares about what Hospice does. They are as invested in us doing it well as we are. Which is fortunate given that’s where we get a tonne of our funding!”

Mr Sheedy said.

In light of the huge number of kilometres travelled by Hospice staff, one of the current fundraising activities is well-focussed: Hospice is covering a staff car with the names and logos of supporters to illustrate how much the community values the work Hospice does.

“The car wrap is a light-hearted way to raise vital funds to continue our work, but it is also a way we can thank those who support us and show just how much our community values what we do. It’s a two-way street,” Mr Sheedy said. Then agreed that was more than enough car and driving puns for today!
